I’m Clara. Welcome to the Craft Room I Actually Use
I was 42 when I stood in the middle of a studio packed with thousands of dollars’ worth of pristine tools and realized I hadn’t made a single thing by hand in over a year.
It wasn’t a lack of supplies. The shelves were overflowing with premium cardstock, pristine paints, and expensive cutting machines. But the joy of making had completely evaporated. The tools I had accumulated during my fifteen years as a commercial designer felt like heavy obligations. Creating had become about perfection, production, and mimicking an impossible internet standard. I sat down on the floor surrounded by unopened vinyl rolls and cried for a solid ten minutes. I’m a practical person; I timed it.
That afternoon was the messy, ink-stained beginning of Druckhaus König.
Why Makers Deserve Better Than “Pinterest-Perfect”
I spent my career inside the commercial design and mass-market decor industry. I sat in the meetings where boardrooms decided what “creativity” should look like, packaging it into intimidating, overly polished kits. They sold the idea that if a handmade item didn’t look factory-flawless, it was a failure.
I started this site for the makers who are tired of that exhausting standard. You might be someone with a closet full of abandoned hobbies, someone who desperately wants to work with their hands after staring at a screen all day, or someone who is simply terrified of ruining “the good paper.” Whichever you are, this space is for you.
A Few Things You Should Know About Me
I don’t believe in hoarding supplies for a “special occasion.” We use the good materials on a random Tuesday here. I have a permanent smudge of block-printing ink on my left thumb. I stopped trying to scrub it off in 2021. I live in Munich with my partner and a rescue terrier named Bruno who believes all dropped yarn is his legal property. I save every single glass jar that enters my house. It is a mild sickness, but a highly useful one for mixing paints.
How We Earn Your Trust
The DIY space is full of fake tutorials and impossible results. I take what we publish personally. Every project on Druckhaus König is tested in a real home, by real hands. We document the mistakes, the wasted glue, and the failed first attempts. If a project takes three hours instead of the promised twenty minutes, we will explicitly tell you. Any sponsored tools or materials are clearly marked at the top of the page.
One Last Thing
There is nothing wrong with your creative instincts. Your unfinished projects aren’t a sign of failure; they are just evidence that you are trying to make something in a world that mostly just consumes. The industry that told you your art had to be perfect to be worthwhile was the problem.
Grab your scissors, embrace the mess, and let’s make something real.
Come say hello at hello@druckhaus-koenig.de.
